Here's a classic naturalist style illustration of some common butterflies found here in Australia.
First, the Caper White, with it's powdery white and velvet black wings. They make a speedy and steady mass migration South, though they do sometimes stop to dilly dally on cold days... I can relate.
In the middle there's the Australian Painted Lady. This varient of one of the most common butterflies on earth is only found in Australia. It differs in that it's smaller and has little blue spots on their hind wings.
Finally, the little long tailed Pea Blue Butterfly. The males have long hair-like wing scales which make them look a little bit shaggy. The long tails serve a protective function, immitating antennae and attracting birds to the expendable rear end of the butterfly's wings instead of their very important head!
