These are red tailed black cockatoos. I've learnt through conversations at the markets that these magnificent birds hold spiritual meaning to many. Some people believe that it brings good luck to find a pair of feathers from a male and a female. Other's say that visits from these birds feel like visits from loved ones passed. This ties into the Nyoongar belief that these cockatoos, known as Karaak, connect the Nyoongar people to their ancestors. Sadly, red tailed black cockatoos are endangered, a vulnerability mainly brought on by threats to their habitat.
